When they’re talking about this being a major overhaul, they’re not overstating it. The ‘64s had some points in common with the ‘49 in terms of practices and layout, and were riding on a platform without many changes since ‘58. ‘63 introduced the “million dollar ride” which fiddled with all kinds of things but didn’t do any drastic changes. Meanwhile, the Fairlane, Thunderbird, Falcon, Mustang, Lincoln... all were riding on track rod suspension and the trailing double a-arm on the Galaxie was a holdover.
The new for ‘65 frame is basically a unibody stand-in frame with ‘58/’59 Lincoln descended rear suspension and Thunderbird front suspension. “Fuck it, we’ve forgotten how to do anything else, and this is working, so...”
